My Unicorn Lovey has proven to be quite popular. I make two versions, one on a six sided blanket and the other on a 10 sided star blanket.
The pattern for the 10 point star lovey blanket is available on this site here, I am still working on the six-sided lovey pattern and will add a link when I have uploaded it.
The Unicorn head and legs are customised using a pattern developed by MelsCrochetHook (on ETSY). If you are interested in purchasing the pattern you can buy it here. Mel is a great designer, her pattern is easy to follow and she has patterns available in both the US schema and the UK one. (Both are included in the price).
Pink Unicorn with a 6 Sided Blanket (SOLD)
Which one do you prefer?
To make this lovey I used 4 Seasons Marvel 8 ply in six colours (White, Black, Teal, Light Aqua, Gold and a Pink Print).
Unicorn:
I used the print for the centre of the 10 pointed blanket and for two rounds to break up the white on the blanket. The edge is a single round of double crochet in the darker Teal/Aqua colour.
I used a 4.00mm hook for the blanket and mane and a 3.5mm hook to make the component of the unicorn. I also used a knitter's needle to sew the legs to the head and then to attach the head to the blanket. The head is filled using polyester fill.
The yarn I used is acrylic, so it can be washed and dried easily but you could make a Unicorn Lovey with 100% Cotton or Bamboo. The only issue is that you choice of available colours in either cotton or bamboo tends to be limited in Australia.
Both Cotton and Bamboo are also heavier than acrylics or polyester so you may need to purchase more yarn and the finished item will be heavier than one made with acrylics.
To make this type of toy you will need to know how to form:
You will also need to know how to increase your number of stitches (i.e., make multiple stitches into the same stitch) and do an invisible decrease.
The blanket is very similar to a granny square. It is worked flat in rounds. The first round is 10 half-double crochets. The second and all subsequent rounds are double crochets with 2 chain at each of the points (from the third round on). The pattern can be used to make your lovey or you can just keep going until your blanket is large enough to use it as a full sized blanket.
A larger 10 pointed star blanket could be used as a floor rug for a baby, as a knee rug for Grandma or as a decorative cover for a cot or a single bed. You can make it as big or as small as you desire. Just make sure that you have enough yarn from the same dye lot to make the blanket the size you want.
You can use yarn from different dye lots if you have another colour in between, in most cases no-one is going to notice. But there are no guarantees and if you are anything like me, you are going to know and it will bother you!
