To get started with crochet you really only need some very basic supplies for crochet, like a hook and some yarn. But if you are 'hooked' on crochet, you are likely to start building a collection of crochet accessories and tools.
The first thing you are going to need is a crochet hook. When you are considering which hook to buy, you need to think about the thickness of the yarn or thread you are planning to use, the style of crochet you want to work on and the type of crochet hook you want to work with.
Hooks vary by size, the materials used to make them (bamboo, wood, metal etc.) and the shape of the handle.
Most of my crochet is done using cotton, polyester or acrylic yarns in 4 or 8 ply thicknesses. I use these types of yarns for dolls, plush toys and loveys. They are also good for kids clothing items and home wares.
However, I have also made items crocheted using finer crochet cottons. The finer cottons are great for items like table cloths, doilies (yes some of us still make these items) or clothing items.
The yarn or thread you choose will depend of the item you want to create and the style of crochet you are planning to use.
Once you are 'hooked', your collection of crochet supplies is likely to grow. This is my basic kit. I have crochet hooks in a variety of sizes, a pair of sharp scissors, pins, a couple of pens and some knitter's needles for sewing my crochet together, all being kept in a large pencil case.
I have a similar kit for my set of ergonomic crochet hooks, a wool winder (manual and electric), a yarn swift and several different type of yarn feeders. Another one of the tools I use quite a bit is a blocking tool for blocking crochet squares to make sure they are all the same shape and size.
