Would you like to learn how to crochet granny squares?

This style of crochet is easy to learn, quick to do and very versatile.  Basic granny squares can be pretty much any size you like. You just keep working row after row until it is the size you need.  If you are making a blanket you can make a lot of small squares and join them together. (Like the blanket I made – see the image below) or you can just do one giant square.

Or you can use small granny squares pieced together to make a scarf, a cover for a pillow or cushion, a basic jumper for a baby or a bib. Learning how to crochet granny squares means that you can make multi-coloured squares from your leftover yarn. Waste not – want not!

Not all granny square blankets are made from leftovers though. I purchased the wool (and it is 100% wool) for the blanket in the image above. I wanted it to match the colour scheme in my spare bedroom.  It sits across the end of the double bed. And apart from looking great, it offers any guests a little bit of extra warmth on cold winter nights.
